MARION, NC (FOX Carolina) -

A woman was rescued and a kidnapping suspect was taken into custody in McDowell County after a joint effort by the FBI and several local law enforcement agencies.

FBI agents said a report of a break-in in the Knoxville, TN area on Wednesday quickly escalated into a kidnapping investigation.

FBI agents, the Knoxville Police Department, the McDowell County Sheriff's Office, the Marion Police Department, the North Carolina Highway Patrol and the McDowell County Office of Emergency Management teamed up to rescue the victim and take the suspect into custody at a rest stop off of I-40 near Marion, just before 7 a.m. Thursday, according to a media release.

Dennis Smith, 53, was taken into custody and is awaiting an initial appearance in federal court, according to the release.

FBI agents said Smith will be brought back to the Eastern District of Tennessee to face charges.

The investigation is active and ongoing, and no additional details were immediately available, agents said.
