GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

On Furman University's scenic lake, next to its Asian gardens, a mother swan dunks her head underwater; it's as if she is looking for something.

The white swan was nesting and had two eggs, campus police said Thursday.

"When facilities checked they reported to us that someone had stolen her eggs," said Furman University Police Chief Tom Saccenti.

He said police are investigating who may have taken the eggs, and why. They said swan eggs are valued at about $350 a piece.

The theft could have serious consequences for Furman's white swans, of whom only two remain - the mother and father.

Police said they are ruling out the possibility a predator took the eggs, due to lack of physical evidence, saying there would have been egg fragments and a big mess left behind.

"We'll pursue it as a criminal case," said Saccenti.

Saccenti also said Furman may install new cameras near the pond. Right now there are no security cameras in that area.
