CANTON, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Haywood County deputies said they arrested an elderly man accused of shooting a dog near Canton.

Deputies said Lewin Burrell, 70, was arrested Thursday and charged with felony cruelty to animals and misdemeanor going armed to the terror of the people.

Mr. Burrell is accused of shooting a mixed-breed terrier in the face with a gun, according to warrants.

The warrants also charge Mr. Burrell with firing the gun in close proximity to a house. Deputies said the shooting occurred Wednesday.

Mr. Burrell is being held in the Haywood County Detention Center on a $2,000 secured bond. Burrell's court date is slated for May 28, deputies said.

Deputies said the dog survived the shooting.
