Former big-leaguer Powell to coach Crusaders

Posted: Updated:

Former major leaguer Landon Powell was named head coach of the North Greenville baseball team.

Powell played four years at South Carolina and helped the Gamecocks to three straight College World Series trips from 2002-04. He was a first-round draft choice by Oakland in 2004 and caught Dallas Braden's perfect game in May 2010. He also was with Houston and the New York Mets, but retired earlier this season because of the death of his daughter Izzy from a rare auto immune disease.

Powell served as a volunteer coach at Furman this past season. North Greenville will be Powell's first college head coaching job.

Powell said he grateful to North Greenville's administrators for the chance.

The Crusaders were 8-35 this season and 2-18 in the NCAA Division II Carolinas Conference.
