Special graduation ceremony held early

DELTA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The high school graduation season officially started today in one Fulton County district, but it was only for one student.

Delta High School Principal Marty Friess says it's the most special graduation ceremony he's ever presided over. There's only one student receiving a diploma: Marisa Lantz.

"In the case of Marisa, she's earned her diploma the old fashioned way, she's earned it," said Friess.

The solo ceremony is being held specifically for Lang's grandmother Connie. She's not well and might not be able to attend the full class graduation ceremony in a few weeks.

"When we are able to have a ceremony because it is so important that a young woman's grandmother be able to witness it reinforces the power of life from generation to generation," said Friess.

The ceremony was held in Connie's home. Lang chokes up when asked about it.

"This is what we do. We deal with young people and their lives. When they invite you into their family and you get to be part of a connection as strong as this, you walk away from it going, 'Wow,'" said Friess.

"It means a lot. Gives me a lot of support," said Lang.

Support was also felt for Connie from a loving granddaughter at a time when she needs it the most.
