Ex-Greenwood Co. Sheriff's Office employee indicted in embezzlement case

GREENWOOD, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Ware Shoals woman has been indicted by a grand jury in connection with the investigation into the embezzlement of more than $10,000 from the Greenwood County Sheriff's Office, Attorney General Alan Wilson announced on Monday.

Sandra Owens, 53, was indicted on the charge of embezzlement of public funds more than $10,000. 

The indictment alleges between February 2008 and January 2013, Owens embezzled money from the sheriff's office and used it to pay for food, clothing and hotels, according to Wilson.

According to a press release from Sheriff Tony Davis in February 2013, Owens had worked as an administrative assistant since January 2009 until she was fired the same day the results of a preliminary audit of the department was conducted.

Wilson said the offense is a felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine.
