Prosecutor: Multipronged challenge in speaker case
COLUMBIA, SC (AP) -
South Carolina's top prosecutor is pursuing a variety of challenges to a judge's dismissal of corruption allegations against House Speaker Bobby Harrell.
Attorney General Alan Wilson told The Associated Press on Tuesday he is working on an appeal, as well as considering a request that Circuit Judge Casey Manning reconsider his order.
Harrell has been accused of using his position for personal benefit. Wilson had been presenting state police findings on the Charleston Republican to the State Grand Jury. On Monday, Manning ruled that process was improper, saying only a legislative panel could consider charges against a lawmaker.
Wilson says the ruling hampers his ability to do his job. He could potentially take the case to the House Ethics Committee or bring it before a county grand jury.
