FLORENCE, AZ (CBS5) -
Two men from Mexico were arrested as they tried to flee a broken down van filled with more than $1 million pot in an unincorporated area of Eloy on Friday, a Pinal County Sheriff's Office spokesman said.
A deputy saw the men standing between a Buick sedan and the 15-passenger van, which had its hood raised, about 1:35 p.m., the spokesman said.
But the men ran to the Buick and sped away as the deputy approached, the spokesman said.
The deputy gave a short chase, but then returned to the van, where he found 1,177 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of $1,332,750.
A PCSO sergeant later saw the Buick westbound on Interstate 10 and pulled it over.
The driver, Raymundo Angulo-Lopez, 35, and the passenger, Jose Leon-Beltran, 30, both of Mexico, were detained and a key to the van was found on the floorboard of the car, the spokesman said.
Both men were booked into the Pinal County Jail for possession of marijuana for sale, transportation of marijuana for sale, possession of marijuana and conspiracy to transport marijuana.
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu said Angulo-Lopez had been previously arrested for drug smuggling and was deported from the U.S. in 2009.
