TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Authorities have identified the wrong-way driver who killed a Mesa Police officer heading home from his shift early Monday morning.

The Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office said 42-year-old Raul Silva Corona, of Phoenix, died at the scene once his vehicle burst into flames after it hit the officer's car head-on at the ramp of  Interstate 10 and US 60.

Officer Brandon Mendoza was rushed to Maricopa Medical Center, but doctors couldn't save him.

The Department of Public Safety said Corona drove the wrong way for about 35 miles, prompting 33 911 calls before the crash.

They said they tried to stop him multiple times, but they couldn't. It was not known whether Corona was impaired at the time of the crash.
