GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Much like the state's peach crops, the iconic Gaffney peachoid that stands tall along Interstate 85 was also damaged during this year's harsh winter.

Passers-by may have noticed some chunks of missing paint along the water's tower that is a shaped like a giant peach.

Kim Fortner, with Gaffney Board of Public Works, said the rough winter's frequent freezes and thaws caused the paint to crack and fall off, especially along the part of the peach's curved indentation. She said the peach's paint is thick with many layers of paint added through the years.

She said in the coming weeks, a crew will climb atop the tower to paint the missing sections and blend it in.

Then during the winter when the demand for water is down, Fortner said crews will drain the tank, cover it with a curtain system that looks like a veil. With the peach hidden from view, the workers will sandblast the paint off down to its steel base then repaint the peachoid entirely.
