GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Head lice can be dirty and shameful for parents and children. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that there are as many as 12 million cases of head lice each year.

Parents often work hard to get rid of the pesky problem with over-the-counter treatments. Pediatric Hair Solutions treats head lice in Greenville, and they claim that drug store treatments can cause health problems because they contain pesticides.

"The pesticides are definitely something you don't want to use on your children or yourself. We have had numerous people come in with numerous problems like irritation or allergic reactions," said Maureen Rable, who works to get rid of head lice.

Pediatric Hair Solutions uses a device called the Airalle that heats the hair and kills the bugs. They claim it's 98 percent effective.

Pediatricians can also treat head lice by prescribing stronger medication, but say over-the-counter treatments are typically safe and effective.

Dr. Justin Dukes, with Parkside Pediatrics in Simpsonville, said there can always be risks with any medicine. Dukes encourages parents to visit their pediatrician if they are concerned.

Pediatric Hair Solutions is the only clinic that offers the Airalle device in South Carolina. The treatments cost $185 per person.
