SENECA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Seneca man has been charged with attempted murder charges after a house fire Friday evening in the Utica Mill Hill area that left a woman seriously burned, according to deputies with the Oconee County Sheriff's Office.

Warrants state Jacob Drotning, 38, of Utica Street, poured gasoline on the victim and set her on fire.

Deputies said they arrived on scene with fire and EMS crews just before 11 p.m. and found the victim lying on the front porch of Drotning's home with burns on her body.

The victim told deputies Drotning had set her on fire, but Drotning claimed he was trying to start their grill with gasoline and it blew up on the victim, according to Jimmy Watt, a spokesman for the Oconee County Sheriff's Office.

Watt said deputies checked the grills and found them cool to the touch with dew on them.

Firefighters later reported that the grills at the home were not involved and the fire was started in a room in the house, Watt said.

Drotning was taken into custody at the scene, and is being held at the Oconee County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.

Watt said the victim had burns on about 50 percent of her body and was in very serious condition Saturday morning.

Deputies said the case remained under investigation.
