BOILING SPRINGS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies in Spartanburg County said a mother has been charged with child neglect after she left two young children alone inside a hotel room.

Deputies said Stephanie Smith, 28, was arrested on Wednesday after they were called to the Carolina Inn & Suites on Hospitality Drive.

Deputies said they received a call from a woman staying at the hotel who said she discovered a young boy crying outside of Smith's hotel room and was not able to get anyone to come to the door.

Deputies said that they knocked on the door again when they arrived a 7-year-old child answered.

Deputies said they soon discovered that Smith had left the children there while she went to pick up the children's father from work.

Smith told deputies the only reason she had left the children alone in the room was because they were asleep, according to arrest reports.

Deputies said Smith was charged with one count of neglect of a child or helpless person and was released from the Spartanburg County Detention Center on her own recognizance late Wednesday night.

The children were left in their father's care.
