SIMPSONVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Simpsonville Fire Department asks drivers to be courteous and expect delays Thursday afternoon during a funeral procession in honor of Battalion Chief Gary Freeman.

City officials said Freeman served Simpsonville for 37 years before retiring in 2013.

Freeman lost his battle with cancer on May 19.

Officials said the funeral procession will come down West Georgia Road from Fork Shoals Road, into the city and turn onto College Street. From there the procession will go to Park Drive and then in front of the Fire Department Headquarters before turning left onto SE Main Street and ending at Canon Memorial Park in Fountain Inn.

Simpsonville police will be monitoring traffic in the area during the procession.

"We request that our citizens respectfully observe the procession if you are in the area at that time and make any arrangements if you are needing to make it to an important appointment and expect this as a delay," said Captain Jay Owens with Simpsonville police.
