CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

NASCAR driver Jamie McMurray honored fallen Asheville firefighter Capt. Jeffrey Bowen by racing with Bowen's name above the passenger side door of McMurray's race car at Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

"First responders such as Capt. Bowen are members of our community and they go above and beyond to keep us safe," McMurray said. "A win in the Coca-Cola 600 would be special, but it would be an honor to drive into Victory Lane with (Bowen)'s name on our race car."

McMurray's sponsor, LiftMaster, is also making a donation to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, which remember America's fallen fire heroes and provide assistance to their families, in Bowen's honor.

"Memorial Day weekend is a time for all of us to remember those that have given the ultimate sacrifice, and we have a feeling that (Bowen) and his family will provide Jamie and his team with some extra luck in this weekend's race" said Neal Villarin, sponsorship and event marketing manger for LiftMaster.

Bowen, a 13-year veteran of the Asheville Fire Department, died while battling a fire in an office building in 2011 that was later ruled an arson.

"As a veteran firefighter, Capt. Bowen is a hero in his community because of his bravery in service, and I am proud to honor him with his name on our race car during the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway," said McMurray.
