SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies in Spartanburg County said a 19-year-old man was charged with assault and battery and resisting arrest after he beat his grandmother for refusing to give him a cigarette.

Deputies said they were called to the victim's home on Fairfax Street around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, where the victim was waiting on the front porch in a wheelchair with visible injuries.

Deputies said the suspect, Robert Steadman II, admitted he put hands on her and that he was sorry, and tried several times to leave while deputies were questioning the victim.

Deputies said they were forced to tackle the suspect at one point and detain him in a patrol car.

Steadman is being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center on a $7,000 bond.
