GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An initiative is underway to bring farms to downtown Greenville, but in order to see it, you'll need to look up. These farms will be on rooftops.

Dan Weidenbenner is the director of Mill Village Farms, a local organization He said is using farming as a way to mentor Upstate teens.

"There's an opportunity to them to give back to their community at a young age and serve their neighbors and serve their community and give back," Weidenbenner said. "We started with two urban farms, we have two rural farms and we've just been given the opportunity to do a rooftop farm."

Weidenbenner said a rooftop at the corner of East Washington and Main Streets is being transformed into a sprawling rooftop garden.

City councilwoman Amy Ryberg Doyle said she supports the idea.

"Urban planners and architects have seen the value of rooftops for many decades," Ryberg Doyle said. "These gentlemen are introducing a rather much more utilitarian idea and offers a tremendous amount of benefits both for the building and the city."

Mill Village Farms needs $50,000 to complete the project and are hosting a summer solstice dinner at their farm in Fountain Inn to help meet the goal.

The Food Network's Simon Majumdar is expected to attend the six-course dinner and wine tasting.

Majumdar is a regular judge on "Iron Chef America" and "Extreme Chef."
