Westfield teen's senior prank leads to felony arrest

WESTFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

One Westfield High School student is now facing criminal charges after allegedly breaking into the school early Friday morning.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Suzanne Scallion said she was alerted around 4:30 a.m. by police that the alarm was going off at the school.

When she arrived she said police had taken a 17-year-old male into custody.

Scallion said the senior broke into the school and coated a portion of the second floor and a stairwell in cooking grease.

Officials said it is believed it was an attempt at a senior prank.

"It just dampens the great affection we have for our senior class. They're a great group and we have to just remind kids to be safe. We want you to make good choices and this was clearly an inappropriate choice. The student will face some significant challenges in court in the days ahead," Scallion said.

School was delayed for roughly 10 minutes while custodial crews cleaned up the grease.

The student is charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit a felony and vandalism.

Westfield Juvenile Court is handling the case.

Scallion said the school department will be conducting their own investigation.
