Cleveland Park's "Canine Corner" to close

Posted: Updated:

The "Canine Corner" at Cleveland Park is about a half-acre strip of land that, in the past several years, has grown wildly popular.

It's not unusual to see dogs, and their owners, having fun there.

"(My dog Laney) knows that the dog park is whenever we say it," said regular Lindsay Snow.

But Greenville Parks and Recreation announced this week that the Canine Corner will be closing. The reason? It's become a victim of its own success.

"It doesn't meet our basic design criteria on a lot of levels," said landscape architect Edward Kinney.

Kinney said that when the dog park opened, it didn't have a lot of community support. But with changing times, things are getting crowded at the dog park.

"The existing dog park is small, it's narrow, it's tight," said Kinney. "You have a lot of potential for dog conflict, which is bad for the dogs, bad for the owners, and bad for the city."

Greenville Parks and Recreation has announced plans for a new dog park at Conestee Park off Mauldin Road. Kinney said the dog park will be double the size of the Canine Corner, offering separate areas for large and small dogs and amenities, like shelters.

Kinney also said the new dog park will also likely lead to fewer noise complaints from residents near Cleveland Park.

Regulars who bring their dogs to Cleveland Park welcome the upgrade, but wish it was closer to downtown.

"We live just off of downtown," said Snow. "I work at the hospital down the road, so really this is the most convenient spot to bring my dog after I get off of work. Going over to Conestee it might be a bit more of a hike."

The Canine Corner closes in August. Construction on the new park is set to begin in June and is expected to cost around $100,000.
