BELTON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Anderson County Coroner's Office said a photograph of a tattoo was used to help identify a man who was hit by a car early Saturday morning.

Deputy coroner Don McCown said Caleb Spone, 17, died from injuries at the hospital.

Troopers with the SC Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 2:10 a.m. on Docheno Road, two miles east of Belton.

A Chevy pick-up collided with Spone, who was lying in the roadway wearing dark clothing, troopers said.

McCown said investigators struggled to identify Spone and asked the media to circulate a photo of a duck tattoo on Spone's right shoulder in hopes that someone who knew the man would recognize the body art.

Ultimately, McCown said a Belton Police officer recognized the victim from based on the photo and asked the victim's family to call the coroner's office.

Troopers said no charges were filed in the crash.

McCown said investigators are still working to determine why Spone was lying in the roadway at the time of the crash.
