GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A soldier from the Upstate who had been stationed in Okinawa, Japan for the last 18 months surprised his young sister at her school's Memorial Day assembly.

George Dickert and his mom had been planning the huge surprise for more than a month, and when his flight into town got canceled, the Dickerts didn't let that stop this mission.

Dickert's mom, Jackie, drove to Richmond, VA, late Thursday night to bring her solider son home. They got little sleep before Operation Sister Surprise was underway.

Early Friday afternoon, officials at the Green Charter School on Pelham Road set the stage. Students were called in for a Memorial Day assembly, in which guest speakers and a few students spoke about what the holiday meant to them.

At the end, school officials called Dickert out from backstage and his sister, Lauren, leapt into his arms.
