CALHOUN FALLS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Calhoun Falls Police Department has charged a man in connection with a shooting that sent one person to the hospital, according to Chief J.T. Galloway.

Galloway said Leon Gates, 23, of Aiken Street, was charged with attempted murder. Attempted armed robbery, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

The shooting happened at a house on Lee Street just after 11 p.m. Tuesday, where the victim told police a masked man attacked him as he was walking to his car.

The victim began fighting with the masked assailant and shots were fired, striking the victim, according to Galloway. During the struggle, the victim told police he was able to remove the mask and recognized Gates as his attacker before Gates ran off.

The male victim stumbled to the neighbor's home and called 911, Galloway said.

The victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Galloway said the man's condition was upgraded to stable on Wednesday and was able to provide insight to officers after he underwent surgery.
