SENECA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies in Oconee County are searching for a man they said ran off with a small child when he saw deputies approaching.

Deputies were dispatched to perform a welfare check on a 3-year-old girl living at a home on Humbert Street on Saturday morning, after receiving a call from a concerned citizen, according to Jimmy Watt with the Oconee County Sheriff's Office.

When deputies arrived on Humbert Street in the Utica Mill Hill area, Watt said a man carrying the toddler spotted deputies and took off running.

Watt said the man ran into a wooded area, through a creek, dropped the child off on the front porch of a home on Village Creek Circle, and then kept running.

EMS checked out the child, who had some minor scratches, but was not hurt, Watt said.

Deputies left the child in the mother's custody and notified the Department of Social Services, Watt said.

Deputies are trying to locate the man, later identified as the child's father, and determine why he ran from law enforcement, Watt said.
