CANON, GA (FOX Carolina) -

Friends, family and fellow law enforcement officers said goodbye to a fallen Georgia deputy in Franklin County on Sunday.

Steven LaCruz "Cruz" Thomas, 26, of Canon died following a crash along I-85 Wednesday night.

Troopers said Thomas was heading north on the interstate near mile marker 163, attempting to catch up to a driver whom Thomas had observed violating traffic laws, when a tractor-trailer attempted to change lanes as Thomas was approaching, causing Thomas to swerve into the grass median, where he lost control of his cruiser.

Thomas swerved back onto the roadway, across both northbound lanes before his vehicle flipped over and crashed into several trees, troopers said.

Thomas was the son of Franklin County Sheriff Steve Thomas and leaves behind a young daughter. The Taliya LaCruz Thomas Fund has been set up for the child at Northeast Georgia Bank locations.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Swails Center on US 29 in Franklin Springs.

Burial services followed at Bowers Memorial Gardens in Canon.
