SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Spartanburg Police Department is investigating an early morning shooting that sent bullets flying into an apartment with a woman and two children inside.

Officers said they were called to an address on Dr. O.C. Kirkland Drive around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The victim told officers she was sleeping when the shots rang out from outside her home, according to incident reports.

The woman told officers she grabbed her two children and huddled with them on the ground as she called 911.

Officers said the shooter fired approximately eight gunshots at the apartment.

Officers noted in the incident report that they counted five bullet holes in the front door, two bullet holes in upstairs windows, and officers said they found a lead slug in a pile of children's toys.

Police said they collected eight shell casings from the sidewalk just in front of the apartment.

K-9 teams were called in to search the surrounding area for the shooter but were unsuccessful, officers said.

The woman and children were not hurt.

Officers ask anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
