GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Greenville County Sheriff's Office said a K-9 is temporarily out of commission after a teenage boy was reportedly bitten on Saturday night.

Deputies said around 11 p.m. they received several 911 calls about large groups of people and shots fired from a vehicle on Goodrich Street.

After that situation was brought under control, a K-9 officer patrolling in the area saw a group of young men at the parking lot of Hollis Academy, according to the sheriff's office.

The deputy said he told them to leave, but they didn't.

As the officer got out of the car to make contact with the group of males to ask them to leave, the dog somehow got out of the car, according to the sheriff's office.

They said they are investigating into how the dog got out of the car.

The K-9 officer told the dog to stop, and the dog obeyed the command. But, the group of males got boisterous and ran, deputies said. They said the dog perceived that as a threat and bit one of the teens that was running.

The sheriff's office said the dog is out of commission temporarily until they can determine why this situation occurred.

Tamara Lykes, the mother of the teen, spoke with FOX Carolina and said her son was bitten on the buttocks and right arm. She said the boy is out of the hospital, but still in a lot of pain.

She said her son was playing at the basketball court when the incident occurred.
