EASLEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Great Dane from the Upstate was dropped off at Greenville Co. Animal Care with severe acid burns on his back, and now an animal foster caregiver is calling for more people to help abused animals and prevent mistreatment.

"It happens in our community, it happens in the backyard and people have to speak up," said Candace Holden, who lives in Easley. "They have to."

"I can't imagine that the neighbors didn't hear him crying," Holden said of the Great Dane, Abel, who she picked up from the animal shelter Tuesday after responding to a Facebook post. Abel was set to be euthanized unless someone came to pick him up.

Holden said with Greenville County's limited resources, abused animals need more advocates and silence is not an option.

"I just want people to value life," she said. "Do something, say something - because ignoring it makes you part of the problem."

Abel will live with Holden and her two other rescue dogs until a suitable home is found for him.

The dog has to use special wash to treat his burns, which a vet determined were caused by battery acid being poured on him over an extended period, Holden said.
