Homeowner says he fired at burglar breaking into home

Posted: Updated:
GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Gaffney homeowner said he had no choice to fire his gun at a burglar who was trying to break into his home early on Tuesday morning.

Cherokee County deputies said they were called to the home on Brights Road around 12:30 a.m. after the homeowner said he confronted a man who was dressed in all black outside his home.

The homeowner said he confronted the man and told him to get away.

A few minutes later, the homeowner's dog began barking and he saw the man trying to get inside his home, the homeowner told FOX Carolina.

The homeowner grabbed his gun and fired shots into the woods where the suspect fled, he said.

"Luckily I had the gun and got my hands on the gun and I had the hammer pulled back as he was jerking on the door," the homeowner said.

He said he was not able to get a good look at the suspect.

The sheriff's office said they are still investigating the case.
