Starr woman harassed by Facebook scammer

Posted: Updated:
STARR, SC (FOX Carolina) -

It all started Sunday, when a woman from Starr who did not want to be identified got a strange friend request.

"I said, 'Maybe it's just somebody who's just getting on Facebook, and she's just trying to get started,'" said the woman, who accepted the friend request from "Dorothy Williams."

The new friend, though, then started making big promises.

"She said, 'I'm here to inform you that I'm a Facebook representative and you've won a prize,'" she said. "'You have won $55,000,'" said the new Facebook friend.

The woman did not fall for the trick, and she said that's when the new friend got even more persistent.

"She said 'This is serious,'" said the woman. "'I am a Facebook representative and you have won a prize, all I need is a little bit of your information so I can get this check to you.'"

The woman said the new friend asked for her full name, address, marital status and phone number, along with her email address.

When the woman refused, more messages like "Hey, how are you?" kept coming, despite the woman ignoring the constant messages.

Vee Daniel with Upstate Better Business Bureau said these types of scams are common but new to the social media platforms.

"This has been happening a lot," said Daniel. "Not just from Facebook, but Apple - they're using the Apple name, Craigslist name, they're using a lot of other names as well."

The scammer then tried to trick the woman, sending pictures of supposed winners of the "Facebook lottery;" pictures of people holding large checks.

The woman said if the messages do not stop, she may have to get the police involved.
