TOCCOA, GA (FOX Carolina) -
More than 100 National Guard soldiers from across Georgia began a deployment on Friday that will take them to Afghanistan.
The Georgia Department of Defense said the 876th Engineer Company is expected to complete a nine-month deployment. The 141 soldiers left Toccoa, where they had been training for a few months, for Fort Bliss first, before arriving in the Middle East around July, officials said.
The DOD said the unit will provide engineering support to U.S. bases and the Afghan military as combat operations there are expected to come to a close at the end of the year. This will be the last scheduled Georgia National Guard unit to deploy to Afghanistan, according to officials.
Local residents were invited to line the streets of Toccoa to say goodbye and offer support to the group as they headed to the airport.
