ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The Buncombe County Sheriff's Office is warning people of a new scam that is targeting the elderly.

Public information officer Natalie Bailey said people posing as energy efficiency specialists are offering free in-home assessments.

According to Bailey, once the offer is accepted, the homeowner is contacted to confirm the appointment, but if it is canceled for any reason, they are threatened with a bill.

She said one person has already been arrested in connection with the scam.

Richard Farrant, of Taylorsville, NC, was arrested on Thursday in connection with the scam in Morgantown, Bailey said.

Morgantown Public Safety investigators discovered that Farrant had a felony warrant in Buncombe County for a similar complaint, according to Bailey.

She said he also has several warrant for his arrest in other parts of North Carolina for similar scams.

The sheriff's office advises anyone that might have been solicited by Farrant to contact them at 828-250-6670.

They said people should be suspicious of people offering home repairs that are only available for a limited time and pressuring homeowners to sign up.
