SALEM, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Central man died at a home construction site on Blue Water Lane in Salem on Monday.

Coroner Karl Addis said the man was a self-employed painter who was doing subcontracting work at the site.

At 1:31 p.m., 911 calls were made saying the man had fallen off a scaffold, according to Addis. When emergency responders arrived, they learned that the man was painting when he fell from a ladder which was leaning against a wall on top of a scaffold, Addis said.

The man then fell down a stairwell to the main floor, according to Addis. He said the ladder appeared to remain stationary when he fell.

He said the fall was estimated to have been 22 to 24 feet.

Addis identified the man as Jerry Wayne Kelly, 56.

According to Addis, Kelly died from trauma from the fall, not a pre-existing heart condition may have contributed to the man's death. He ruled his death an accident.
