Newberry County Sheriff's Office warns of lawnmower, equipment thefts

Posted: Updated:
NEWBERRY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A local sheriff's office is warning residents of lawnmower and other thefts as we head into summer.

The Newberry County Sheriff's Office said zero-turn lawnmowers, farm utility vehicles, all terrain sport utility vehicles and trailers are being easily and quickly stolen from homes across the state due to their high demand.

The sheriff's office said the items are targeted because they can be sold easily in neighboring communities, usually at a much lower price than they are worth.

They said the thieves typically identify the items they want to take and return with a moving truck or a rollback type trailer.

The sheriff's office gave the following tips to keep your property safe:

  • Do not leave items near or close to the highway.
  • Make sure serial numbers are recorded and stored in a safe place so that the items may be placed into the national computer system if stolen.
  • Immediately call 911 if suspicious activity is spotted.
  • Please don't leave any of these items in areas that are easily accessible or near the roadway.

They said if someone approaches you with items like lawnmowers or farm equipment at a greatly reduced price, call law enforcement.
