A former teammate of Roderick Drummond, the Greenville man who was killed in a collision with a train in Tennessee on Friday, is setting up a fund to help Drummond's family with funeral costs.

"He was such a great player, but he was a better kid," said Drummond's coach Darryl Nance of Wade Hampton High School.

"He was always like a big brother on and off the court," said Jay Anderson, Drummond's former teammate and best friend.

Drummond played basketball for Wade Hampton and graduated in 2011 before attending Roane State Community College, where he was a sophomore on the school's basketball team.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol reported Drummond, 22, was a passenger in a car that collided with a train in Roane County on Friday. Judah Gallaher, 18, also died in the wreck. Reports said the driver, Darius Gallaher, 20, was injured, as was another passenger, 20-year-old Hunter Crass.

Both Nance and Anderson said the news of Drummond's passing was shocking.

They said the idea to set up a fund came after a rally the team had Sunday night where they talked about Drummond and prayed for peace surrounding his passing.

Anderson deposited $20 in the fund at the Bank of Travelers Rest on North Pleasantburg Drive on Monday.
