Deputies: Got a golf cart? Better know the law

Spartanburg County deputies were out Tuesday making sure golf cart owners know the laws of the road, and they say they're doing it to save lives.

Lieutenant Tony Ivey says deputies were mostly handing out warnings and a quick lesson on South Carolina's golf cart laws. Ivey said while the carts are becoming more popular, few know the steps they need to take to be on the road legally.

"We want to make sure people are operating them in accordance with the law," Ivey said. "Golf carts are not toys."

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 15,000 people are badly hurt in golf cart accidents each year and almost half of those are children.

"A 9, 10, 12-year-old is not the person that needs to be operating a golf cart on the road," said Ivey. "It's a recipe for disaster."

According to the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles:

  • Golf cart operators must be at least 16 and have a valid driver's license
  • Golf carts can only be on the road during daylight hours
  • Golf carts must be insured and registered with the DMV
  • Golf carts can only be on secondary roads or streets posted at 35 mph or below

Ivey says for now deputies are only handing out warnings, but those warnings will soon turn into fines that could run hundreds of dollars. Ivey says the hope is to keep people safe, especially kids.

"We don't want a child's summer to end because mom or dad let them jump on a cart and drive the streets of the neighborhood," Ivey said.
