SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Spartanburg police said an officer shot and killed a pit bull to save the life of a dog being attacked by the animal.

According to incident reports, the shooting happened at a home on Fulton Avenue, when an elderly woman called to report that her neighbor's pit bull had dug a hole under their common fence and had entered her yard, where she said the neighbor's dog was trying to kill her pit bull.

The responding officer said he arrived to find a brindle-coated pit bull biting the homeowner's brown pit bull in the throat and mouth area.

The officer shot the animal three times, killing it and stopping the violence, according to the report.

Reports state the owner of a slain dog was located and agreed to cover the veterinary care costs of the dog that was attacked.
