200 more migrant children expected to arrive in Nogales

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) –More migrant children from Texas, about 200 of them, are expected to arrive in Nogales Monday because of overcrowding there.

That's according to the Honduran Consulate for Arizona. Officials tell us a lot of them say they crossed the border because they're searching for their parents.

Conditions are so crowded, that officials had to create a make-shift holding facility to process the kids. We weren't allowed inside to show you, but were told it's not the best -- but not the worst either. Portable showers were brought in for them to use. We're also told there's a medical team there.

No word yet on how long these children will stay in Nogales.

The Honduran Consulate for Arizona says agents are only able to process paperwork for about 30 children at a time.

A statement from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol, El Paso Sector says: "The Nogales processing center is equipped and used for processing apprehended individuals. The Tucson Sector has secured additional services such as a Health and Human Services medical screening area, additional bedding, laundry facilities, recreational and shower areas. Vendors have been contracted to provide nutritional meals. The planned capacity of the NPC is to accommodate approximately 1,500 unaccompanied children. The Nogales facility will be used as a way-station before the children are sent to Health and Human Services' designated sites."
