Restaurant owners serve up a taste of home

Posted: Updated:

When Rob Ferguson is in the kitchen, it feels like home to him.

"Just like grandma does it," Ferguson said.

He's the co-owner of Zamorah's Restaurant in Simpsonville.

"We got the good stuff, the best stuff around town," he said.

And customers think so too. They said they love the country-cooking style menu.

"Give me the pork chops," one customer said.

Most of the customers know the menu well.

"We have country fried steak, fried chicken, pork chops, fish," Ferguson said.

However, one customer named Tom said it's a hot pink sign in the restaurant's window that got him through the door.

"I've been homeless for nine years," Tom said.

The sign states a free meal for the homeless.

"When I saw it, I couldn't believe it. I said 'wow!'" he said.

And neither could Dawn, nor Tom's friend Chuck.

"I'm trying to look for a job and get on my feet," Dawn said.

"They're good people," Chuck said.

Ferguson said he cooked up the idea when a man asked to work for food.

"God put it on my heart to try and give back to the community," Ferguson said. "We gave him a free meal and then he came back and wanted to pay for his meal and I was like well 'no' because this is our blessing."

And now other customers stop by and donate to help out with the next meal all for strangers who say they want a chance.

"When you're looking for work, you don't have no address, you usually don't have a telephone. Sometimes you can't present yourself with dirty clothes," Tom said.

Ferguson said he knows what it feels like to struggle.

"We don't have a whole lot. But we're just trying to give back the best way we can," he said.

So, even if some of his customers don't have a place to go, they can still have a taste of home at Zamorah's.

Greenville County is one of several counties in the state with the highest increase in homelessness since 2011.
