Undocumented children could continue arriving until late summer

Posted: Updated:
TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

It has been almost one week since the first wave of undocumented Central American children arrived in Arizona from Texas.

Hundreds are still waking up in a Nogales detention center this morning and more undocumented children could continue flying into Tucson for the next several months that is according to the Nogales Mayor Arturo Garino.

He says Border Patrol told him the processing facility in Nogales will continue to take in children until September.

Some groups like the Kino Border Initiative are frustrated the federal government has not give specific guidelines for how the community can help.  At this point the federal government has not asked for any help.

The City of Nogales initiated the clothing drive and the mayor believes the clothes are getting to the children.  Garino says with more children coming, the need for help is going to grow.

"Three days from now, you might not see the same kids there.  They are going to be some more.  We are going to see them all through the summer."

Again these children are coming to America, by themselves without their parents.  Tucson City Council member Regina Romero wants to help by opening up a Tucson-based shelter.  She has requested the council talk about it at their next study session.
