Pat McKinney drops out of lieutenant governor race

Posted: Updated:
CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston businessman Pat McKinney says he has decided to withdraw from the race for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor.

McKinney said he made the decision Thursday afternoon. He said he and his wife had both lost their fathers recently, and his family is his priority.

According to McKinney, he has made a few calls to his supporters to let them know of his decision.

McKinney was nearly tied for second place after Tuesday's primary, and a recount seemed inevitable.

"It's certainly worth the effort, I have enjoyed it," McKinney told Live 5 News' Debi Chard on Thursday."I am proud of the way we ran the race. I'm proud of the team we put together and I'm proud of the people who stepped up to support me. So I walk away with no regrets and feel as though we have every reason to be proud. I just wish the remaining candidates the best."

With McKinney dropping out of the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor, Mike Campbell will face Henry McMaster in the runoff on June 24.
