WAYNESVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

A Haywood County man who deputies said intentionally wrote more than $30,000 in worthless checks has been arrested.

The Haywood Sheriff's Office said three witnesses claimed they loaned money to 65-year-old Samuel Hartman, who asked them for the money during a financial emergency.

They said Hartman attempted to pay them back with checks from an account which had insufficient funds.

The checks ranged from $4,000 to $11,500, according to the sheriff's office.

Hartman was released in lieu of $40,000 secured bond on Thursday.

Deputies said the case remains under investigation.

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Haywood County Sheriff's Office at 828-452-6666 or the Waynesville Police Department at 828-456-5363.
