FOREST CITY, NC (FOX Carolina) -

With the increase of underage drinking during graduation season and summer break, local police are cracking down retailers selling to them.

Forest City police and the Rutherfordton Police Department conducted an alcohol compliance check at stores that sell alcohol in the cities on Thursday. Six stores in Forest City and three in Rutherfordton were cited for selling to someone underage.

In Forest City the Mustang II, Wilco, Drop-In Food Store, Alexander Pit Stop, 74 Junction and the Forest City ABC store. In Rutherfordton the Phillips 66 Express Store, the One Stop Store and the Sai Mart.

Forest City police said the six people responsible for the sales were charged on Friday morning and notices of violations will be issued to the North Carolina Alcohol Beverage Commission.

"This is just one way that we can combat underage drinking, if we limit the ability for the underage kids to purchase alcohol, we reduce the risk associated with this dangerous mix of youth and alcohol. We have seen the consequences of this deadly mix, and we want to prevent it," Forest City Police Capt. Chris Lovelace said.
