GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Greenville Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their own.

A post on the department's Facebook page explained that K-9 officer Gio died after he was hit by a car near Woodruff and Scuffletown roads Saturday around 1 p.m.

Police said the dog was off duty when he jumped out of the vehicle he rode in and was hit by a passing car. He later died from his injuries.

Gio is known as a hero in the community. In March, he took down a handcuffed suspect who escaped from a bail bondsman and was on the run for more than 24 hours.

Greenville police said he will be missed.

Details about a memorial service for Gio will be released at a later time.
