GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A rising Gaffney High School senior drowned in the Broad River on Sunday, according to the coroner's office.

Cherokee County dispatch confirmed a search was underway earlier in the evening for a person believed to be in trouble on the river.

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and CKC Volunteer Fire Department responded to Wolf Den Lane near Gaffney just before 8 p.m., dispatch said.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler identified the victim as Berry Palmer, 18, of Cowpens.

Palmer and some friends were swinging on a rope into the water, and Palmer failed to come back to the surface, Fowler said. He said several witnesses tried to pull him out of the water, but were unable to rescue him.

Palmer's body was recovered just after 8 p.m. Sunday, by personnel from the CKC Fire Department, Fowler said. Palmer was pronounced dead at the scene.

EMS, DMW and agents with the Department of Natural Resources also assisted at the scene, dispatch said.

The investigation is ongoing, but there is no reason to suspect any foul play, according to Fowler. He said family reported that Palmer was not a good swimmer.

Family and friends gathered on Monday by the water to remember Palmer. His family said he was an aspiring Marine, loved by all.

"You know he touched a lot of people, I mean he was a great kid, he was a great kid," Palmer's stepfather Henry Cumberlander said. "He had so much potential."
