HOLYOKE, MA (WSHM) -
A heroin dealer was arrested for stabbing and trying to kill a Holyoke man Monday afternoon in the city's Flats neighborhood, according to Holyoke police officials.
Holyoke Police Lt. Jim Albert told CBS 3 that a 26-year-old Hispanic male was stabbed in the upper chest area while he was on Mosher Street near the intersection of Center Street.
The victim was rushed to Baystate Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. He was still in critical condition Tuesday morning after doctors performed surgery on him for the stab wounds, Albert said.
Police arrested 22-year-old Jose Morales, of Holyoke, at 10 p.m. Monday as he was standing on the corner of Ely and North East streets. He was in possession of more than 40 bags of heroin when police took him into custody, Albert said.
Authorities charged him with assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon (knife), breach while armed, armed assault to murder, possession of a class A substance, (heroin) and possession of a class A substance with intent to distribute (heroin), according to an arrest report.
Morales was held on $100,000 bail and is due in court July 25. He has been previously arrested on drug charges.
Authorities responded and secured the crime scene at about 12:15 p.m. Monday while detectives conducted an investigation. Detectives were still inspecting a vehicle that was parked in the area of the stabbing at about 2 p.m.
Holyoke police made the arrest with the assistance of a state police chemist and state police detectives assigned to the Hampden County District Attorney's Office.
Police have not released a photograph of Morales. The case is still under investigation and anyone with additional information is asked to call the Holyoke Police Criminal Investigations Bureau at 413-322-6940.
