Grijalva cancels kids tour

NOGALES, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Congressman Raul Grijalva was scheduled for a 2 p.m. tour in Nogales.

He was supposed to tour the warehouse at the Nogales border station being used to house hundreds of kids from Central America, but he canceled the tour when Border Patrol refused to allow a group of religious leaders he brought with him to go on tour as well.

It was not a surprise, according to Grijalva.

He says he told Border Patrol who was coming within the 24-hour window required by Homeland Security.

He says, "I was assured there was no problem."

The Border Patrol told him he could go on the tour with a member of his staff but the others would not be allowed.

At that point, he canceled.

When asked he said, "They didn't refuse. I canceled."

Grijalva brought the group because he wanted them to see what was going on and report it to the media and other members of the public.

There has been some criticism of the operation for its secrecy.

He wants it to be more transparent.

He says he will meet with the Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday to "iron things out."

He's confident the entire group of seven will be allowed to take the tour.
