Deputies warn Buncombe Co. residents with rise in car break-ins

ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Buncombe County deputies are reminding car owners to take precautions to prevent auto break-ins after a recent rise in thefts.

Deputies said they have seen an increase in car break-ins around the southern and eastern parts of the county.

Thieves are targeting unlocked vehicles and deputies are reminding people to lock their cars and not leave valuables inside.

"Criminals that engage in these types of crimes are looking for soft targets," Sheriff Van Duncan said. "Locking your car doors and removing valuables from your vehicle reduces your chances of becoming a victim of your vehicle being broken into."

Anyone with information on these types of break-ins is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 828-255-5050 or the sheriff's office at 828-250-6670.
