BBB Alert: Phone bill 'cramming' scam could cost you thousands over time

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Federal agents recently shut down a giant "cramming" scam, in which in which dishonest companies add fake charges to phone bills, hoping the customer does not notice.

The Better Business Bureau says they have seen crooks add as much as $40 a month to phone bills.

Despite last week's actions by the federal government, some are still running the scam.

Charges on phone bills are often confusing, which allows crooks to "cram" additional items.

Lin Miao and his seven California companies added $ 9.99 per month to thousands of bills for worthless services. The charges appeared on phone bills, itemized as nonsense codes like "77050IQ12CALL8663611606" or "25184USBFIQMIG"

Customers trying to discover what they were got nowhere and couldn't get refunds.

The crammers are ordered to surrender $10 million in cash and luxury properties, cars and jewelry.

Dick Eppstein of the Better Business Bureau says customers should always carefully examine the phone bill for confusing or incorrect charges.
