SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

When a man tried to steal the cash drawer from a Spartanburg store, deputies say the clerk hit him and the two briefly struggled before the robber fled, leaving behind a New York Yankees ball cap.

On Monday, Spartanburg County deputies were called to a BP gas station on New Cut Road where a robbery was reported.

A man came in and bought a beer, but when the clerk opened the cash drawer, the man said "where is my change?" according to deputies. Deputies said the man then tried to grab the drawer and money, but the clerk fought back, hitting the thief in the head.

The suspect swung back but missed, and in their fight, his hat fell onto the floor behind the counter, deputies said.

Deputies tried looking for the suspect but did not find him, but as they continued to investigate and did a photo line-up. They said the man was identified as Randall Bratton.

Bratton, 46, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with strong-arm robbery. According to his arrest warrant, Bratton was able to get away with $100.
