Redskins trademarks canceled by U.S. Patent Office

Is the mascot "Redskins" offensive?

A lot of people are weighing in about the controversy surrounding Washington D.C.'s NFL team. The U.S. Patent Office canceled its trademarks of the Redskins on the grounds it's "disparaging to Native Americans."

There are a few main points to be taken from the ruling:

1. The Washington Redskins can continue to use their name. However, it does allow others to use the trademark without risking patent infringement litigation.

2. The team's owners said they will appeal Wednesday's decision, which could take years.

3. The ruling is a small victory for Native Americans wishing to have the team change its name. It may not force the team to act, but it keeps the story in the spotlight and forces the team to continue to react to the public relations backlash.

The team name has been a point of controversy for decades. Other professional teams, including the Atlanta Braves and Cleveland Indians, have made efforts to make the portrayal of their mascots less offensive.

Former Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann tweeted: "On the Redskin name. I was proud to wear the uniform & always will b. It is Mr. Syder's choice if it stays. 80yr tradition #HTTR"

Amazon introduces Fire smartphone

Amazon's first smartphone, the Fire Phone, has a lot of bells and whistles. Company CEO Jeff Bezos unveiled it Wednesday at an event in Seattle.

The Fire Phone will launch July 25 (preorders begin now) and will be exclusive to AT&T customers in the U.S. Depending on size, it will cost between $199.99 to $299.99 with a two-year contract.

The new device is a little smaller than the Android but a little larger than the iPhone.

The Fire Phone's display is capable of display 3D images, with an effect that adds the illusion of depth behind the screen, rather than outward.

Firefly is another new feature that lets you scan any product, even music and TV shows playing in the background. It then pulls up the information to buy it on Amazon.com, read more on Wikipedia or even see nutrition information via MyFitnessPal.
